Registered agents accept what’s called “service of process” and other legal documents on behalf of your business. They can be either individuals or businesses who agree to accept these documents on your behalf. States require them when forming a domestic business entity in a state or filing a foreign registration if your business was formed in another state.
Why Do I Need A Registered Agent?
The simplest answer is that it’s a state requirement when registering your business. Registered agents act as a primary point of contact on behalf of your business. Meaning, if a particular state or entity needs to contact you for any reason, your registered agent lists their name and address for them to do so. They then forward the information received to you for review and any needed action.
